TREND REPORT: Autumn/Winter 2021

TREND REPORT: Autumn/Winter 2021

With the Autumn season upon us, it's time to start shifting our focus towards our winter wardrobe pieces and this season there are some key influences and trends that you will definitely be seeing pop up everywhere in some iteration.

I have spoken before about our buying philosophy for The Nowhere Nation - we love to find pieces that give a nod to fashion and runway trends in a way that still allows the pieces to stand the test of time. We like to be guided by trends but not ruled by them! It's also so important to take into consideration your personal style and lifestyle - wearability is key!

So here are a few key trends to look out for Autumn/Winter 2021... let us know which ones you will be investing in!

It's Hip to Be Square -

The square toe, which has actually been popping up again since 2019, is still sticking around. Giving off a slightly more edgy, brazen and sharp look, the slightly more comfortable and practical toe shape (compared to its sharp, pointed sister), the square toe is infiltrating all categories of footwear. It's equal parts futuristic and nostalgic - drawing inspiration from 90's fashion and iconic pop culture like the TV shows Friends and Sex & The City. For a more subtle, elegant squared toe - look to Lola Cruz and Kat Maconie or explore Reike Nen for something more architectural and edgy!

Material Girls -

There is a wide variety of materials this season! We are seeing the rise of patent leather (leather coated with plastic film to make it super shiny and hard wearing) on the runway from designers like Acne, Balmain and MSGM which has then trickled down into footwear by our designers. Satin has continued to be a popular A/W material seen on runways at Altuzarra, Chanel and Brandon Maxwell, and we have even seen innovations in leather that is ultra-smooth to actually feel like satin - how cool! Animal inspired textures and prints continue to be part of the conversation too. Designers such as Celine, Burberry and Fendi incorporated variations of zebra, leopard and cow print into their collections and we always find it's fun way to add a bit of interest to your wardrobe. Suede and flat leather are still playing big roles too as staple, classic choices for A/W21.

Matrix Reloaded-

On the runways we also saw the rise of the "Matrix" trend - all black looks consisting of mix materials such as leather, suede and knitwear all accented with silver or gold details. Designers to draw inspiration from include Balenciaga, Fendi and Hermes. The trick to pulling this look off is to really pay attention to the textures. Mixing textural elements will help to add visual interest and keep your outfit looking polished and not drab! Combat style boots have been a popular style in this trend, and we have seen a lot of classic, leather styles that will work perfectly for this look.

Fit for a Queen -

The colour palette of the season includes rich, deep jewel tones especially in shades of green, red and purple. Designers including Valentino, Tom Ford and Altuzarra showcased bottle greens, burgundys and dark purples in their runway shows. We always love these tones as they exude a level of sophistication and also really don't date! You can wear them now and for years to come.

Wild Wild West -

The western inspired boot trend has been a big one for the last few seasons and it's still going strong this year! We love a cowboy-esque boot, as they are a great option to have in your wardrobe for a casual ankle boot that still makes you look put together. Drawing inspiration the classic cowboy boot and from designers such as Isabel Marant, Chloe and Khaite - our designers have re-interpreted this style in their own way, that makes them super wearable for everyday.
